A marriage license is valid for ninety days from issuance. A seventy-two hour waiting period is required from the time the marriage license is issued until the wedding-ceremony can take place unless, one of the applicants is in the military or completion of a marriage education class; or a Judge per FAM 2.204 following the issuance of the marriage license grants a waiver.
OBTAINING REMOTE MARRIAGE APPLICATION (VIRTUAL)
The Jefferson County Clerkâs Office is pleased to offer marriage license applications remotely. The same basic requirements listed below apply; however, instead of visiting our office in person, couples may appear via video conference. Those who complete the virtual process are considered to have appeared before the court.
Technical Requirements:
- A computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet
- A reliable, high-speed internet connection
- A microphone, speakers, and webcam for audio and video
Important NoticeAny video session utilizing static or virtual backgrounds, background blur, AI segmentation, avatars, or filters will result in immediate termination of the remote session. The virtual application will be rejected, and no refund will be issued.
Each applicant MUST meet the requirements and be prepared to provide and upload required documentation during the application process and pay the applicable fee(s) via credit card only. Both parties must be at least 18 years of age. Must have a valid, government-issued picture identification and use the ID Verify Tool, if applying via video conference. Must know Social Security number, if applicable. If a Texas resident, you must be able to provide and upload proof of residency.
Remote Marriage Applications are by Appointments Only:
- Appointments: Monday through Friday.
- First available booking time: 8:30 AM
- Last available booking time: 4:00 PM
- Appointments cannot be scheduled within two hours of submitting your application.
- A clerk must review all submitted information and documentation before your appointment can be confirmed.
Please plan accordingly to avoid delays.
